Project Overview

As the lead designer, I was tasked with creating a compelling T-shirt design that aligned with our brand identity and still felt relevant for everyday wear. The goal was to turn a small artifact into a clear communication piece for the team.

Duration: March 1, 2024 - March 19, 2024

Tools: Figma

The Challenge

Create an intriguing T-shirt design that:

  • Embodies brand identity and values
  • Appeals to our team for everyday wear
  • Effectively communicates our brand at conferences and events
  • Sparks curiosity and conversation about our IoT solutions

My Role

As the lead designer and visual designer for this project, my responsibilities encompassed:

  • Spearheading the initial design concepts and ideation process
  • Conducting research on effective T-shirt designs and brand representation
  • Facilitating user interviews to gather feedback and preferences
  • Iterating on designs based on stakeholder input and user insights
  • Creating the final design using Figma, ensuring it aligned with brand identity
  • Collaborating with the development team and stakeholders to refine and perfect the design

The Process

1. Initial Exploration and Reassessment

I began by exploring existing designs and quickly realized that a more thoughtful, user-centered approach was needed to meet our team's expectations and brand requirements.

2. Iterative Design and Stakeholder Alignment

Through multiple iterations, I refined the design based on team feedback and our brand guidelines. This process involved:

  • Conducting mini-workshops to align stakeholders on brand voice and design direction
  • Incorporating UI elements from our product to maintain visual consistency
  • Experimenting with logo placement, size, and integration with illustrative elements
  • Brainstorming with other designers to ensure alignment with brand's voice: trustworthy, informative, professional, and approachable
Second iteration design

3. Creative Breakthrough: The "IoT World" Concept

After extensive sketching and ideation, I developed a concept that was both visually appealing and true to our brand identity. The design featured:

  • A flatline illustration style representing an interconnected world of IoT devices
  • A touch of humor and approachability to make the tech concept more relatable
  • Clear representation of brand's focus on IoT devices and their global impact

4. Final Refinement and User Validation

With stakeholder input and user feedback, we made final adjustments:

  • Expanded the visual scope beyond Earth to represent brand's broad potential in IoT
  • Incorporated the logo prominently while maintaining design harmony
  • Refined the accompanying text to be more action-oriented and intriguing
  • Conducted quick user interviews to validate the design's appeal and wearability

  • Embodied brand identity and values
  • Gained approval from the team and stakeholders
  • Created a wearable artifact that people could use in informal and public settings
  • Served as a simple conversation starter at events and conferences
  • Boosted team morale and sense of brand unity

Key Learnings

This project reinforced several important design principles:

  • The value of thorough research and ideation, even for seemingly simple projects
  • The importance of aligning design with brand voice and identity across all touchpoints
  • The benefit of iterative design and incorporating diverse stakeholder feedback
  • The impact of creating products that users genuinely want to use (or wear) in their daily lives
  • The power of visual design in transforming a simple item into a brand ambassador

Impact

This project shows a different aspect of the offer: creative management used to align teams around a shared narrative. While not a core product feature, it demonstrates how structured facilitation and iterative design can turn abstract positioning into a usable communication asset.
